The firsts had a facile 6-0 victory over Cloughmills Thistle on Saturday for the record the scorers were Dean Anderson(2), Barry Travers, Sean Lennon, David Gilmore and fresh from his geography lesson with Cass on the way up Sean Russell netted a sixth. Sat nav required for the next round I think!
The seconds lost but it was a great afternoons entertainment and if there is a better game in Division 2 this season I hope I see it. Both teams tried to get the ball down and play football as it should be played. The first period was fairly even with neither side having a really good opening, exchanges were hard but in the main well controlled by referee Joe Fitzsimmons. The town upped their game in the second half and enjoyed the majority of possession. Twice within a minute the Ballyvange keeper made excellent saves to deny Luke Toner when goals seemed certain. Try as they might the home side just couldn’t apply the finishing touch and with 15 minutes remaining they were dealt a cruel and controversial blow. The ball went out for a throw in to Ballyvange but instead they took a corner and with Castlewellan protesting the visitors scored. Further pressure from the town proved fruitless and they left wondering how they didn’t get something from the game. Sorry lads I took about 6 photos but the only one that came out properly was master tactician GooGoo imparting his wisdom at half time – I will rectify the problem for next week.
Castlewellan thirds had an easy afternoon winning 3-0 at Ballyvea. The town dominated the game from the first whistle with Donagh and Toots running the midfield. Shane Mooney scored twice one a penalty and Toots got the other. Good to see the evergreen Packie McCartan getting a run out, word has it that WD40 are sponsoring him this year!
Another good weekend for the under 17s who had a resounding 4-1 win over Temple. The towns goalscorers were Breannan McComisky, Micky Cunningham, Aidan Dornan and Conall Corrigan. Best for the town were Conor Rea, Stevie Connolly and Declan Gregory. With Rory Burns on the mend soon from his shoulder injury and Joe O’Neill returning from suspension, competition is hotting up for places which can only be healthy for the team.
The under 15s fared less well going down 3-0 to Rossglass
The under 13s defeated Killough 4-0. It was 0-0 at half time but clearly was only a matter of time before the town took the lead and Ruari McCooey duly obliged 5 minutes into the second half. Shortly afterwards Gareth McKibben scored a beauty after being released on the left by Darragh Hamilton. It was pretty much all one way traffic and the town got a third although it remains debatable as to who scored. Ruari wanted to claim it but if you look at the picture of the goal on the website he isn’t anywhere near the action! Ryan O’Rourke came on as sub and sealed the game with a neat finish after being set up by Sean O’Boyle who was Castlewellan’s man of the match.
The under 11s kept up their excellent start to the season with a 1-0 victory over Killough. They should never have been so hard pressed for the victory after hitting the bar twice and missing a penalty, however Ruari McGuinness scored to make the points safe. Man of the match was Matthew Muldoon closely followed by Jack McCourt, Adam Garland, James and Nadine McAleenan.

A few club members are away to Portugal this week for a spot of golf but it seems that they got off to an inauspicious start, apparently about 10 minutes from the airport one of their number requested that the minibus made a quick roadside stop as he was taken short. It would appear that he was taken very short indeed as he came out of the field minus his T shirt!! I’m sure the rest of the lads let it go at that and it was never mentioned again, couldn’t take them anywhere!
30 years ago this coming weekend the firsts defeated Ballyvea 2-1 in the Junior Cup at the Mourne venue, Charlie Trainor and Marty McVeigh were the scorers. The seconds were due to play Kilmore but arrived there with no strip!
20 years ago the firsts were due to play Greenwell Star in the Junior Cup but they were dismissed after falling foul of the regulations. The seconds defeated Strangford 3-0 unfortunately no record of the scorers.
