The firsts won 3-0 against Mourne Rovers (see report) Aidan Burns(2) and Dean Anderson the scorers. The seconds and thirds had no official game but a hastily arranged friendly against Ballynagross Seconds took place with the Town losing 5-4, scorers were Rory McMullan (who also missed a penalty), Breannan McComiskey, Shane Mooney and Joe O’Neill and by the way did I mention that Rory missed a penalty! Thanks to referee Vince ‘How am I supposed to know’ Quinn!
The under 17s won 3-0 against Tollymore with goals from Jamie Clarke(2) and Jed McCartan. Thanks to those who turned up and for those who didn’t If you can’t be bothered at least let your manager know.
The under 13s had a top of the table clash with Tollymore on Saturday. The boys began the game brightly and had the better of both early possession and territory but lacked a cutting edge. Tollymore did not have that problem and, cheered on by an impressive support along their full sideline, took the lead with their first real chance of the game. Castlewellan responded well to this early set back and Ruairi McGuinness showed great strength and skill in holding off a physically bigger defender to run into the box and score, bringing the Town level. That was to be as good as it got for Castlewellan. Late in the half Tollymore won a throw in deep in Castlewellan territory and while the Town lads distracted themselves complaining to the referee, Tollymore seized their opportunity. The throw in was taken quickly, the ball was allowed to bounce in the Castlewellan box and the Town lads found themselves 2-1 down at half time.The second half was a tight affair but Castlewellan found themselves second to most balls and unable to get a grip of the game. That said chances were made, with the Town hitting the post and Tollymore clearing off the line, but the decisive score was to come the way of the Newcastle team with a fine goal from outside the box late in the game. It proved to be a disappointing day from start to finish for Castlewellan with only James McAleenan standing out on the pitch. The Town will have to show a work ethic and commitment to rival their skill and ability if they want to take anything more form this season.
