The town retained the Bobby Dalzell cup last night with the minimum of fuss and goals from Tin Tin and Rusty in the first half saw them home and hosed.
They couldn’t have got off to a better start with a goal in the first minute, when a cross from the right evaded everyone bar Nial Toner who bundled the ball home. Castlewellan really should have been further ahead soon after when following a flowing move Toner again found himself in front of goal but wasted the opportunity. Killough saw plenty of the ball but came up against a resolute Town defence and Watson in goals was rarely troubled, in fact I can only recall him having to make one save of note in the first half. Just as it looked that we would have to settle for a one goal lead Liam McKibben released Aidan Burns on the left, he made his way across the 18 yard line fed Dean Anderson who immediately laid the ball off for Sean Russell to fire home a second from 25 yards, a wonderful strike and it was no more than the Town deserved.
Killough came out fighting in the second period and had good possession but found it difficult to get a clear sight of goal and were restricted to shooting from distance. Between them Aidan Kelly and Mickey Watson ably assisted by the excellent McArdle and Stratton kept the Castlewellan back line organised and the outcome was never really in doubt. Again though the town’s forwards were very wasteful in front of goal with several great chances going abegging, however 2-0 it stayed and Bobby resides in Castlewellan for another year!
Man of the match went to Sean Russell who was excellent on the night but he was hard pushed for the award by Donal McKibben and Barry Travers, most of the team acquitted themselves well although Aidan Burns wasn’t at home on the lively surface.
Well done lads but don’t forget there are some very important games coming our way in the quest for more silverware starting with a league game away to Valley Rangers next Saturday and the Harry Clarke semi final against Ballyvange the week after so stay focused.
