Castlewellan kept up the pressure on league leaders Ballyvea with a comprehensive victory on Saturday. In the end the town won with something to spare but found Kilkeel a tough nut to crack in the first half and it was only in the second period when they played with width that they got in behind the visitors and the goals eventually came.
The first half was only 3 minutes old when Toner had his header disallowed and not long after Russell blazed over from a good position. The narrow pitch didn’t help Castlewellan and they tended to crowd the middle instead of play the wings. It was 9 minutes into the second half before they got their noses in front when Dean Anderson flicked a header into the corner from McArdle’s long throw, minutes later they doubled their advantage with a carbon copy, this time Aidan Burns getting on the end of McArdle’s throw to head home. Shane Mooney came on and worked hard up front for the town getting his reward with yet another headed goal finishing off a Burns cross. Two more goals in the space of two minutes killed the game off completely when both Toner and McArdle netted. Burns completed the scoring with 5 minutes remaining.
Three welcome points with the big one against Ballyvea this Saturday where victory is an absolute must for the town if they are to maintain a challenge for the title.
