What a fantastic season it has been so far for the Town, the Bobby Dalzell Cup is safely locked away, now add to that the Premier title and with just the Harry Clarke Cup Final on Friday night to go there is a possibility of the elusive treble.
We knew on Saturday that only a win would do us up at Ballyvea and that Valley Rangers would have to get something from their two remaining games against Ballyvange and fortunately for us thats just how it worked out.
On the match itself neither side dominated in the first half with chances at a premium, the closest anyone came to scoring was Liam McKibben who found himself right through on the goalkeeper but the uneven surface cost him dearly and a golden chance was lost. Ballyvea came into their own early in the second period without really testing Mickey Watson in goals and when the news came through that Valley had defeated Ballyvange (which had kicked off 30 minutes early for some reason), Castlewellan upped the ante and really took the game to the home side, the town should have already been ahead before the incident that ultimately was to give them the title. Aidan Burns (pictured) who had a stormer worked his way across the Ballyvea area and as he was about to pull the trigger was unceremoniously ‘taken out’ and from the resultant penalty he unceremoniously found the back of the net. In the dying seconds Ballyvea missed a glorious opportunity to equalise. An excellent performance from all the lads with the only concern being Dean Anderson’s injury. He had to go off in the second period when he tweaked his hamstring but is hopeful that, with treatment he’ll be ok for Friday night. However it looks as though Daniel Morgan may miss the final due to injury.
Cue great celebrations that went on long into the night and lets hope we have something more to celebrate next weekend, but it won’t be easy.
The under 13s play old rivals Tollymore in their cup final next Saturday morning and all support would be greatly appreciated. These have been the best two teams in the division all season and there is very little between them so expect a close game, it should be a cracker. Lets hope though that all the young 13s have their big day in the sun and are not pressurised from doing so by so called ‘responsible adults’ who really should know better.
