Castlewellan Notes 12-11-12

The firsts won through to the Bobby Dalzell quarter finals (see report). The second team had a difficult fixture away to Ballynahinch Olympic but emerged victorious. The  lads started well and efforts from O’Neill and Mooney narrowly missed the target. The Town took the lead on 25 minutes when O’Neill’s long throw caused panic in the Olympic box and came off a defenders head, although several Town players laid claim to the goal it has to go down as an OG. Both teams cancelled each other out in the second half although McCommisky almost made it 2 but his effort came off the post. Best for Castlewellan were a resolute back 4 and goalkeeper.
The third team went down 3-1 to Valley Rangers thirds, Thomas Rice scoring for the town.
The under 17s lost narrowly to Ballynahinch. Castlewellan had their chances especially in the second half when two great opportunities were spurned, but they can take heart because it was an improved performance. Best for the town were Rooney and Flaherty with Josh Stanley man of the match.
The under 15s went down 3-2 to a big Saintfield team, the lads were 3-0 down just into the second half before they sprang Ruairi McGuinness from the bench, he notched a couple of goals but it wasn’t enough.
The under 12s were defeated by a strong Portaferry team, Doyle and O’Hare came close for Castlewellan but couldn’t get the better of a good side. Stratton, O’Hare, Robb, Watson and Tumelty all showed up well for Castlewellan but man of the match went to Anton Ozga who caused the Portaferry backline problems all day.
At last weeks committee meeting it was decided that anyone sent off for an avoidable offence eg foul and abusive language to a referee or violence (subject to a managers report) will have to pay their own fine before they are allowed to play again, all fines add up over a season and is an expense we can do without.
Old ‘Beaten docket’ Boden was in fine voice on Saturday at the first’s game where he was singing his new song ‘Zoom is winning matches’ which he hopes to have out for the christmas market, where did he ever get that idea.
