The firsts overcame Tollymore to move up to second in the league (see report).
The seconds were at home to Ballynagross in a real top of the table clash. Both teams started brightly with Ballynagross causing the town problems down the wings and from one cross Duffy in goals had to save smartly at his near post. Castlewellan replied when a great move down the right that saw Flannigan skip passed his marker to fire in a low cross which the ‘gross defence could only clear as far as Dornan who fired narrowly over the bar. In the 35th minute Ballynagross got their opener, from a town corner they broke quickly and as they cut across the town goal a scuffed shot found its way into the corner of the net. In the second half the town started well, shots from Beckett and O’Neill forcing the Ballynagross keeper into action. Then came the turning point in the game, Flannigan went passed his marker in midfield, touched the ball around the last defender and as the keeper came out his shot hit the post went across the goal hit the other post and came out. With the town pressing for the equaliser and pushing more and more players forward it was no surprise they got caught short at the back, with 10 minutes remaining Ballynagross scored their second, a flicked header into the danger area was won be Ballynagross striker who header over the advancing Duffy. To the town’s credit they kept going and almost got one back, a cross from Beckett was met in the box by Lawless but his header went just over the bar.
A good performance from the seconds players, once again proving their commitment and determination for the team.
Best for the town were Dornan, O’Neill, Lawless and Flannigan.
The thirds were defeated 5-0 by Downpatrick seconds but of more concern were the disciplinary issues that emanated from the game, no doubt this will be discussed at the next committee meeting with the thirds very existence in jeopardy.
The under 17s had a good 2-1 win against Killyleagh, they took a 2-0 lead with goals from Ruairi Greenan and Josh Stanley. Good defending from Martin McCourt and Shane Smyth saw the town hold out. Man of the match was Sean Conlon (pictured, green shirt).
The under 15s defeated Ballynahinch 4-1. They went a goal behind early on but rallied and were all square by half time with a goal from big Ruairi McGuinness. The lads came out all guns blazing in the second half and took control with 2 more goals from McGuinness and one more from ‘wee’ Keelan Burns. Ballynahinch had two good chances to reduce the deficit but Chris Rooney (pictured, orange shirt) saved well on the edge of the area and then proceeded to save a penalty late in the game. Jack McCourt, Dara Ward and Callum O’Toole all played well but special mention to Ruairi McGuinness who has now scored 8 goals in the last 2 games, well done Ruairi!
There will be a poker night in Maginns on Dec 27th with a guaranteed £1000 pay out, tickets are £10 and will be out next week.
