Castlewellan Notes February 25th

The first team progressed to the Harry Clarke Cup quarter finals (see report).
The seconds had their first game in 10 weeks and at times it showed, this top of the table clash was not a game for the faint hearted with both teams giving 100%. The town started slowly, not surprisingly, and it took them 10 minutes before they got going, a move, starting from the back, the ball was played into midfield and a swift pass into McComiskey allowed him to run at the Ardglass defence, he got his shot away only to see it go narrowly wide, both teams cancelled each other out after that and at half time it was 0-0.
Second half began well for the town, Beckett and Dornan coming close but the Ardglass forwards were looking threatening too and it took a great save from Duffy to keep them out.
In the 55th minute Ardglass got the break through, a goal kick was miss hit, resulting in the town keeper injuring his foot, the ball fell to the Ardglass striker and he scored from close range. What was to follow has to go down to tiredness and players concentration levels dropping, on 3 different occasions the town defence failed to clear the ball properly and on all 3 occasions Ardglass scored. The town kept battling on but the match was over as a contest and the game finished 5-0 to Ardglass.
On reflection the lack of games may have had an effect on the result but the town where beaten by a good Ardglass team.
Best for the town were; Dornan, McComiskey, Crilly & Beckett.
