Immaculata 3 Castlewellan 1
Castlewellan went into this game with nothing to lose, playing a team who are current holders and playing in 6 divisions higher than them. Well normally you would have been happy enough with the score line but as Castlewellan has already shown this year they are not a team to be messed with and Immaculata found this out.
Castlewellan started brightly with a strong breeze behind them, they pushed Immaculata back with every opportunity. Half chances came and went for Castlewellan and Immaculata knew they were in a battle. Castlewellan went in front on 35mins with a classic strike from Karol Jaroinski and it was no more than they deserved, in truth it probably should’ve been more but that’s the way it stood at half time.
The second half started as expected with Immaculata pushing hard to get an equaliser and it came on 55mins when a free kick out on the right was allowed to drift across the box which caused confusion and the Immaculata Centre forward finished to the net. At this stage Immaculata were pressing and Castlewellan were hitting on the counter attack with minimal success. The next goal was always going to be crucial and it came from a vicious in swinging corner which struck both the crossbar and post and fell to the Immaculata forward who headed in. Castlewellan tried hard to get back involved but couldn’t break through and Immaculata got a third from a corner which was hit to the edge of the box which was struck goalwards and the initial shot was saved by Burns in the goal but the rebound was hammered to the net.
Again Castlewellan pushed hard to get something but nothing came and the 3-1 score line was the way it finished. While the lads can hold their heads high in defeat, it was disappointing to concede 3 goals from set plays, this performance would’ve won many a game but Immaculata showed that wee bit know how to pull through. Best for Castlewellan were E Moag and B Travers.
Barry Travers
