Castlewellan failed in their attempt to win the Cochrane and Corry Cup on Thursday night when they went down 2-0 to a very good Suffolk side. Certainly nobody can argue that the 2A team deserved their victory but the ‘Town’ have nothing to be ashamed of being defeated by a side as good as this who have already annexed the Junior Shield and sit top of 2A with only Rosemount Rec capable of catching them. What will haunt Castlewellan will be the two goals they conceded, firstly an unnecessary foul given away on the edge of the area with the Suffolk man heading away from goal resulted in Chris Ferguson striking a beauty into the top corner. the second was a disaster when a loose ball in the Town’s area could and should have been cleared into row Z but hesitency in the defence saw Justin Armstrong nip in and steal the ball before slotting home. Having said that Suffolk did carve out some very good chances and a penalty but found man of the match Rory Burns in imperious form, if any of those had gone in we couldn’t really have complained but the two we did concede were galling. Certainly Castlewellan did have a few chances but for once we didn’t have our shooting boots with us unfortunately. In retrospect one or two of our players didn’t bring their ‘A’ game to Seaview, perhaps the three week break since our last game didn’t help us but for sure the defeat cannot be put down to a lack of effort from the 15 that took the field.
However when all is said and done we have had a successful season, the 2C title was number 1 priority and it is always nice to get a cup run. Hopefully with the return of some former players and the addition of a couple more we can go into 2B next season with confidence knowing that on our day we can compete with the best.
