Castlewellan Notes 3-12-12

It was with great regret that we learned of the death last Sunday of former player Cathal Keown. Cathal was no mean player, turning out for the town in the eighties and is well remembered for a fierce will to win. Off the field he was as civil a man as you could wish to meet and our sincerest condolences go to Roisin, Gareth, Deborah and the wider family circle.
The seconds travelled to Kilmore on Saturday and came away with a creditable draw. The town started off well and had early shots from O’Neill and McComiskey saved by the home keeper. Castlewellan where very dangerous down the wings and from one such attack got their first goal, ONeill’s cross was whipped into the Kilmore box where Dornan met it with a half volley to score the opener. Kilmore’s response was almost immediate, a long ball over the towns back four caught them flat footed and the Kilmore striker was onto it in a flash, he rounded the keeper to score from 8 yards. This was a tight match both sides playing some good football but it was the town who took the lead again, great work on the wing by Beckett saw his cross half cleared but as the ball dropped in the Kilmore box everyone hesitated except Corrigan who pounced on the Kilmore indecision and headed home from 10 yards.
The town started to dictate the play in the second period, A Dornan and O’Neill causing problems for the home side, but for all their play the town couldn’t find the net and with 10 minutes remaining the Kilmore striker intercepted a back pass, took the ball to the by-line and crossed low into the box to find his fellow striker to tap in. The town tried to regain the lead but where unable to score and the game finished 2-2.
Best for the town were,  S Dornan, O’Neill, Corrigan, A Dornan and McKibbin.
