Firsts continue good start thanks to 5 star Jarosinski
The firsts continued their good start to the season with a good win away to local rivals Ballynagross. The 6-4 scoreline flattered the hosts as, in truth, the final scoreline should have been a lot worse but for some questionable finishing and defending from the town. The boys got off to the perfect start when a long throw from Lee Ward found the head of Smed Murray who flicked the ball into the back of the net for his 3rd goal in 2 games. The same combination then led to the second goal only a matter of minutes later with Murray’s header being blocked this time but Jarosinski was on hand to smash home the loose ball. This was to be a day to remember for Karol in front of goal. Ballynagross were clearly rocked here and the town should have put the game to bed at this point when Steele and Jarosinski both missed good chances. These chances came back to haunt the town as Deagens grabbed 2 quick goals against the run of play. With Ballynagross very much back in the game, it took a moment of magic from Jarosinski to put the town back in front as his long range effort arrowed straight into the top corner giving the keeper no chance.
The action didn’t stop there though as the eventful first half continued with Ballynagross getting a penalty with 5 minutes remaining. There were no arguments from the town boys but it was Mickey Watson to the rescue as he denied Deagens a first half hat-trick. There was to be a first half hat-trick though with Karol Jarosinski heading home from a Steele flick on to grab his 3rd and the towns 4th in what proved to be an eventful first half. With the clock ticking down to half-time, the town turned counter attackers with Lee Ward combining with Kamil Jarosinski on the break and after a mix-up between a Gross defender and the goalkeeper, Ward was left with an empty net to roll the ball into. Unfortunately, young Lee got a bit excited and proceeded to put his boot through the ball with the goal at his mercy and blast over the top. The ball ended up in a housing estate about a mile away and Lee will have the tag of worst miss ever hanging over his head for a long time no doubt!
The second half began with the town very much on top with Jarosinski and Steele dominating in centre midfield. It was the older of the Jarosinksi brothers who really shone in the second half though as Karol helped himself to 2 more excellently taken goals thanks to assist from his brother Kamil, and the evergreen Steven Trainor. The town continued to press and should have added to the 6 goals they already had with Trainor, Steele, Ward and Fitzsimmons all going close. The boys showed some nievity in going forward and left themselves open on the break. Ballynagross benefited from this with Fryer grabbing a consolation from the spot and Deagens getting a hat-trick to cap what was an impressive performance from the Gross front man. The final whistle went and on reflection, the town management will be more than happy with the 3 points in a venue that is never easy. Plenty of chances were created and converted and the new look, youthful team continues to impress. The big worry from Saturday was the goals that were conceded and this is something that can probably be put down to early season rustiness, but something that needs corrected. Best for the town were Donagh Steel, Lee Ward, Kamil Jarosinski and man of the match Karol Jarosinski after helping himself to 5 goals.
Next up for the firsts is a home game this Saturday against Ravenhill YM as the boys look to make it 3 from 3 in 2C.
Seconds return to winning ways with McKibben shining
The seconds returned to winning ways with a comfortable 3-1 win away to Castleabbey. The Town came out of the blocks flying, playing some great football and deservedly took the lead early on through the lively Gareth McKibben. Castlewellan continued to pile on the pressure and the second goal game from a 20 yard left footed rocket from Micael Corrigan. O’Neill was unlucky not to make it 3-0 just before the break when he hit the bar from a 30 yard free kick.
Castleabbey came into the game more in the second half but Castlewellan defended resolutely and Joe Cunningham in nets was a match for any Castleabbey efforts on goal. Aidan Dornan and Gareth McKibben combined brilliantly for McKibben’s second late on and a late consolation goal from Castleabbey made the Final score 3-1. After the Match Castlewellan manager Paul Hanna stated that his side “showed great bouncebackability following last week’s defeat”.
Next up for the seconds is their debut in the Bobby Dalzell Cup as they take on Dromara 2nds away. The firsts have won the last 5 Bobby Dalzell Cup’s so here’s hoping the seconds can continue to carry the torch for the town in the premier Newcastle League cup competition.
Thirds still looking for first points
The thirds went down to their 2nd defeat of the season with a 2-0 defeat away to Annalong. With the GA season having an impact on the players the 3rds management can put out, hopefully results will start to pick up in the coming weeks. The boys have no fixture this weekend.
Training continues every Tuesday and Thursday at the 3G at 7pm and new players are welcome. Membership is now due and costs £25 for the year.
Good start to DYFL for youth teams
The DYFL started this weekend and it was a positive start for the 3 youth sides in action with the under 17s and 15 both recording good wins and the under 13s drawing in a high scoring game.
The under 17s beat Saintfield 7-3 away with goals coming from Eoin Moag (2), Eoin Travers (2), Ethan Aulds, Tiernan Noade and Christy Maguire. Best for the boys were Daniel Cunningham, Callum McKibbin and man of the match, Eoin Travers.
The under 15s started with a 2-1 victory away to Celtic Bhoys thanks to goals from Lorcan Cairns and Ruairi King with Conor Matthews putting in a man of the match performance.
The under 13s began their season with a high scoring 4-4 draw against Portaferry.
Fixtures for this weekend see the u17s at home to Patrician – KO 9.30am out the Bann Road. The under 15s are also at home as they take on Portaferry in Annsborough at 11am while the under 13s face Tollymore at 11.30am in Dunleath Park on Sunday. If you are free this weekend, please go along and cheer on the stars of the future. There are some talented footballers coming through the club at present.
Youth training continues with the under 11s training Monday night 6-7, under 13s Tuesday night 6-7, under 15s Wednesday night 6-7 and under 17s Thursday night 5.45-7.00. All youth training takes place at the 3G pitch in Castlewellan.
New players are welcome across all age groups. Don’t forget that we have under 9 football every Sunday morning from 10am at the 3G pitch. This is a good introduction to football in the town.
Last man standing begins next Saturday
We are currently running a last man standing competition which will begin on Saturday 26th September (next Saturday). Cost to enter is £10 with £300 prize money for the winner. These fundraising competitions go a long way to supporting the club financially with 3 adult teams and 4 youth teams fielding every week. If you would like to enter the last man standing please contact a player, manager or member of the committee to get an entry form.
Fundraising Boxing Night set for November
