Another highly successful day for the town with the firsts comfortably winning 4-0 away at Ravenhill YM, scorers were Karol Jarosinski (2), Jason Croskery and Shane Mooney. Only 4 games left now, big push needed for promotion and possible championship.
The seconds take pride of place this week after an astonishing 5-0 victory over Drumaness Mills seconds in the Harry Clarke Cup semi final at Bear Park Newcastle.
In a fairly even first period chances were at a premium with Mills looking the more likely to score early on. Castlewellan played their way into the game with Ward, Doyle and Corrigan tightening their grip on midfield. The Town took the lead after 28 minutes when Dornan set up Gareth Mckibben who cleverly lobbed the keeper. Castlewellan were getting the upper hand now but had to thank Danny Cassidy for making an excellent stop down low a couple of minutes before the break. There was still time however for Noel Travers to score a second right on the whistle, his mishit effort looked to be going over but dipped just enough.
In the second period Castlewellan didn’t take long to extend their lead when McKibben’s speed again left the Drumaness defence floundering racing through to slot home confidently. It was 4-0 after 55 minutes when Conor Doyle scored after a lungbursting run, it was no more than he deserved as he put in a great shift. Certainly Drumaness played some nice passing football but had no real cutting edge, Connolly and Magorrian were in no mood to concede anything. with time running out there was yet more from young starlet McKibben who again left the Mills defence in his wake to chip the keeper for a second time.
It was an excellent performance all round from Castlewellan and while Gareth McKibben got the plaudits for Man of the Match all the Town players contributed greatly to a memorable victory. They now face Annalong in Easter Mondays showpiece final.
