The firsts stayed on course for the title with a comfortable win against Kilkeel (See report). One of the big talking points on Saturday night was Ruari’s wonder goal (as he called it) the only wonder I could see was that it crossed the line at all with several ricochets and deflections along the way. Anyway he was happy with it!
The seconds played their penultimate game of the season against Ballyvange and emerged with a 4-2 victory, Thomas Becket got a hatrick (two direct from corners) yohi, a past master at such trick shots tells me that he taught him how to do it, Daniel O’Rourke scored the other goal.
The club wish a speedy recovery to former stalwart Charlie McAlinden who is unwell at the moment, maybe a 20th title for his beloved Man Utd will perk him up a bit. Get well soon Charlie.
A few years ago in these notes I mentioned about a former player in the 70s whose car broke down at Drumee Cemetery going to a match in Kilkeel, all hands managed to get lifts in vehicles coming behind and when asked what he thought the car’s problem was he said in very technical terms that he didn’t know ‘It just let a yelp out of it and lay down!’ Well it seems that another local man was on his way towards Ballynahinch some time ago when his car started making unusual noises just after Brennans, so he pulled in to the side of the road and like myself not being very good mechanically made his way to the council yard up the road to seek advice as to what the problem might be. Our man strode into the council’s garage and collared one of their fine mechanics who inquired what sort of noise the car was making, to which he replied that there was ‘A sort of a chuckin and a goin on in it!’ To which the mechanic replied that he might have a hen under his bonnet!!
There should be a couple more wee stories regarding several persons (including Pierce and PC) that came to my attention at the weekend but I’m afraid my writing got progressively worse as Saturday night wore on and now I can’t make out my rough notes! So lads this week you get a reprieve.
Congratulations to our former chairman Stevie and his wife Darina on the birth of their first child.
As far as I’m aware there is going to be a charity match on the 26th May between Maghera Golden Oldies v Castlewellan Town Golden Oldies to mark 25 years since that great Maghera team won the Junior Cup and Shield in the same season. It won’t be pretty but it should be fun, watch this space for more details.
