Despite some heavy showers the Kieran Toner Memorial Shield presented by Geraldine McKibben (Kieran’s sister) went ahead with Tollymore(a) emerging victorious on the day. They defeated Coney Island(b) in the final but were hanging on by their fingertips for the first period as several great saves and the crossbar kept them in it. However Tollymore came into the game the further it progressed and two late goals gave them the victory they richly deserved as they were undoubtedly the best team on view.
In the semis Coney Island(b) beat Castlewellan(c) while Tollymore(a) beat Coney Island (a)
Player of the tournament presented by Kate McVeigh (Kieran’s sister) went to Tollymore’s David Forsythe, an elegant and clever player who we will hear a lot more about in years to come, he always seemed to have time on the ball and has clearly learned that retaining possession is everything.
Thanks to all who helped in any way especially Yohi, Jim, Paul, Kenny, Declan, Felix, Michael, and Collie (sorry if I left anyone out) who all helped to ensure the competition went ahead smoothly. It has been mooted that next year’s Shield will be held in Portugal as we haven’t been too lucky with the weather of late, but I’m sure all would agree it was good craic nonetheless! See you next year.
